This uses standard photo enhancements on the image (e.g. increases the contrast, brightens the colors, etc.) This may yield a better looking pattern, but since many programs use similar techniques this may have no noticeable effect on your pattern.

Dithering is a technique for making smoother looking transitions when using a small number of thread colors. It breaks up large blocks of a single color to make smoother looking transition, but ends up taking more effort to stitch.

For example, in pictures of the sky there is often a gradual change in the color of blue as you get closer to the horizon. However, in a cross stitch pattern this gradual change may become a very abrupt line between two different blue threads. Dithering alternates between the thread colors, allowing for a smoother looking transition between the two.

We've found that most patterns look reasonable without dithering, and so only recommend you use this if you notice abrupt changes between large patches of solid colors.
